Mare Liberum
In 2018, the association Mare Liberum was founded in Berlin by a collective of transnational activists to carry out human rights observations “Mare Liberum” in the Aegean with their own ship. At sea, a crew of five people with a variety of skills and expertise is deployed. Equipped with nautical and special technical knowledge, experience in sea rescue, media savvy, knowledge of human rights work and research, our team operates in the field around the clock. First and foremost, however, we are on site to observe and critically examine independently from our ship.

Mare Liberum monitors the human rights situation in the Aegean with its own ship. With our ship we are present off the coast of the Greek island of Lesvos. As an independent observer, Mare Liberum conducts research to document and publish the current situation at the European border. Our results and observations are made available to the European public and refugee lobby groups.
