The Mare Liberum association is on the move with its ship in the Aegean Sea to observe and document human rights violations. The aim is to increase the pressure to rescue refugees at sea and to strengthen human rights and solidarity.
In 2018, the Mare Liberum association was founded in Berlin by a collective of transnational activists. The aim of our mission is to observe and document the migration across the Aegean Sea, from Turkey to Greece, as well as the subsequent search and rescue missions (SAR) of the Greek and Turkish coast guards from our ship. In addition, a general presence of independent observers during operations by state actors at sea - such as NATO and Frontex - is intended to ensure that life-saving and dignified treatment of migrant women is ensured.
